Just look at that view out of one of the saunas at Steam & Salt – doesn’t get much better than this!Â
Steam & Salt Sauna – One of the UK’s Best Beach Sauna Experiences?
There’s something incredibly satisfying about sitting in a hot sauna while looking out across the sea. It’s an experience that leaves you feeling both relaxed and invigorated, and it’s easy to see why sauna culture has exploded in popularity across the UK over the last few years.
The health benefits of regular sauna use are now well documented. Research suggests that sauna bathing may help improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress, aid muscle recovery, improve sleep quality and promote an overall sense of wellbeing. Combine that with cold-water immersion and you have a ritual that many people now swear by for both physical and mental health.
As a result, outdoor saunas are appearing in some truly spectacular locations—from remote lochs in Scotland to lakeside retreats in the Lake District and, increasingly, along Britain’s coastline.
I’m always on the lookout for a unique sauna experience and as someone who lives in the North-East and regularly visits Tynemouth, I was excited to hear that Steam & Salt had opened its permanent beach sauna near me on Longsands Beach in 2026. After seeing the incredible location, I couldn’t wait to give it a try.
I’m pleased to say it completely lived up to expectations.
Positioned directly on the sand, the saunas sit just metres from the North Sea. At high tide, the water comes incredibly close, making it one of the most scenic beach saunas I’ve visited. It’s hard to imagine a better setting to unwind.
Steam & Salt actually consists of 2 saunas side by side – the smaller one to the left and a larger one to the right.
About Steam & Salt Sauna
Steam & Salt first introduced sauna experiences to Tynemouth using mobile sauna tents on the beach, quickly building a loyal following among sea swimmers, surfers and wellness enthusiasts. Their popularity demonstrated just how much demand there was for an authentic Nordic-style sauna experience on the North East coast.
Building on that success, Steam & Salt opened two beautifully designed permanent saunas overlooking Longsands Beach in 2026. The new timber-clad saunas feature large panoramic windows facing the sea, allowing everyone inside to enjoy uninterrupted coastal views while they relax.
The location couldn’t be much better. Whether you’re visiting after a coastal walk, an early morning sea swim or simply looking for an hour to switch off, the setting makes the experience feel special.
My Review of Steam & Salt Sauna
Incredible Sea Views
The standout feature is undoubtedly the view. One entire wall of the sauna is made from floor-to-ceiling glass, and every seat is orientated towards the sea. Rather than staring at wooden walls, you’re watching waves rolling onto the beach, surfers catching waves and the ever-changing North Sea. Even on a grey day there’s something mesmerising about it.
Perfect for Cold Water Dips
One of the biggest attractions is how close the sea is. Between sauna sessions you can simply walk a few metres (at high tide) onto Longsands Beach and immerse yourself in the chilly North Sea before heading back into the warmth. Alternating between heat and cold boosts circulation, improve recovery and leave you feeling incredibly refreshed. Whether you’re an experienced sea swimmer or trying contrast therapy for the first time, it’s hard to beat this setting an dyou should definitely make use of the sea.
Relaxed Atmosphere
The whole experience feels calm and welcoming. The saunas are modern, clean and thoughtfully designed, making it easy to forget about work, phones and everyday distractions for an hour.
Fantastic Location
Even without the sauna, Longsands Beach is one of the North East’s best beaches. Add a quality sauna overlooking the sea and you’ve got a brilliant combination. Afterwards you can explore Tynemouth’s cafés, restaurants, priory or take a walk along the coastline.
Limited chnaging facilities
There really isn’t much to criticise about Steam & Salt. The only slight downside is the limited changing facilities. There are small changing areas, but because of the beach location they’re fairly basic. It isn’t a major issue for me, but arriving ready to use the sauna by just havung to take off a coat definitely makes things easier.
A simple outdoor cold shower would also be a welcome addition. While the sea provides the perfect cold plunge, some visitors may prefer a quick freshwater rinse before heading home.
Final Verdict on Steam & Salt Sauna
Steam & Salt has created one of the finest beach sauna experiences in the North East. The combination of beautifully designed saunas, panoramic sea views and easy access to cold-water swimming makes for an unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re looking to relax after a long week, recover after a coastal walk, or simply experience the growing sauna culture that’s sweeping the UK, Steam & Salt is well worth a visit.
Rating: 4.8/5
I’ll certainly be returning.
I could sit in this sauna all day and just watch that sea – the view is absolutely incredibleÂ
My Top Tips Before You Visit
- Check the tide before booking. High tide brings the sea much closer to the sauna, making the experience even more atmospheric and reducing the walk for cold-water dips.
- Keep an eye on the weather forecast. While the sauna is enjoyable in all conditions, clear, dry weather really lets you appreciate the coastal views.
- Arrive wearing your swimwear if possible, as the changing facilities are fairly compact.
- Bring a towel to sit on inside the sauna.
- Pack a changing robe—it makes getting changed afterwards much easier, particularly on cooler or windier days.
- Don’t forget plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated during and after your session.
How Much Does Steam & Salt Cost?
At the time of writing, I paid £16 for a 1 hour session in a shared sauna – but Steam & Salt offers a range of sessions depending on whether you book a shared or private sauna. Prices are competitive with many other premium beach saunas around the UK, and considering the spectacular location overlooking Longsands Beach, I think it represents excellent value.
I’d always recommend booking in advance, especially at weekends and during the summer months, as sessions can sell out quickly.
If you’re searching for a sauna near me in the North East, Steam & Salt is one of the most unique experiences you’ll find.
How to Book the sauna at Steam & Salt
Booking couldn’t be easier. You can do it online – Simply choose your preferred date and time online before arriving a few minutes early for your session.
If you’re planning to visit after work or on a sunny weekend, I’d recommend booking several days in advance as popular time slots disappear quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I park for Steam & Salt?
There are several parking options within a short walk of the sauna.
- Longsands Beach car parks
- Front Street
- Grand Parade
- King Edward’s Bay (slightly longer walk)
Parking charges vary depending on the time of year, but I’ve never struggled to find somewhere nearby.
Is Steam & Salt suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. Whether you’ve used saunas for years or it’s your first visit, the experience is welcoming and relaxed.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
After checking in, you’ll get changed and be shown to your sauna and given a quick explanation of how everything works. Once inside, simply relax and enjoy the heat before taking breaks outside to cool down.
Many people alternate between:
- 10–15 minutes in the sauna
- A dip in the North Sea
- Five minutes cooling down
- Repeat two or three times
By the end of the session you’ll probably feel calmer, more relaxed and surprisingly energised.
Is It Worth Visiting at High Tide?
Definitely. One of my biggest tips is to check the tide before you book. Use at website such as this for tide times: https://www.tidetime.org/europe/united-kingdom/tynemouth.htm
When the tide is high, the sea comes incredibly close to the sauna, making the views even more dramatic. It also means you only have a few metres to walk for your cold-water dip.
Low tide is still enjoyable, but you’ll have a longer walk across the sand before reaching the water.
Can you swim in the sea afterwards?
Yes. Many visitors enjoy cold-water immersion between sauna sessions. Just be aware of sea conditions and only enter the water if it’s safe to do so.
What should I bring?
- Swimwear
- Two towels (one to sit on and one to dry yourself)
- Drinking water
- Flip-flops or sandals
- A changing robe
- Warm clothes for afterwards
Is it open all year?
- Yes. In fact, many regular users say autumn and winter are the best times to visit, when the contrast between the hot sauna and the cold North Sea is at its most invigorating.
Is Steam & Saltthe Best Sauna Near Me?
If you live anywhere in North East England, including Newcastle, North Shields, Whitley Bay, South Shields, Sunderland, Durham or Teesside, Salt & Steam is certainly one of the best beach saunas within easy reach. I live in Teesside, about 45 min drive away and it is certainly the best sauna near me.
The combination of panoramic sea views, beautifully designed saunas and direct access to the North Sea makes it far more memorable than a typical spa sauna.
Whenever someone asks me where to find a sauna near me in the North East, this is now one of the first places I’d recommend.
