Staithes walk to the best viewpoint over the Staithes Cottages on the Yorkshire coast near Whitby
August 25, 2020
A stunning view of Staithes in North-Yorkshire overlooking the cottage rooftops. This timeless view of the old fishing port is one of my best views in Northern England and I’ll never tire of it.
The best view of the Staithes and it’s old cottages in North-Yorkshire
The quaint old fishing village of Staithes, steeped in history and character, on the North Yorkshire Coast in England is one of my favourite coastal village in the whole of the UK. I visit Staithes quite often as it’s only an hours drive away from home and I much prefer a visit here than the busy tourist hot-spots of Whitby and other coastal villages.
Whenever I do visit Staithes- I always do the short walk across the river and up Cowbar Bank to see the brilliant view pictured above. However, even when the High Street and beach is really busy – not many people seem to make the walk up Cowbar Bank to this stunning vantage point over looking the Staithes cottages and rooftops. So I thought I would do this little blog post to help visitors to Staithes see this sight for themselves! Read on to find out more so you dont mss it on your Staithes visit:
I’ve highlighted on this aerial map exactly where the photo of Staithes at the top of this page was taken – at the end of the arrow in the above image. It is quite easy to get to if you are able to walk up the little bank for a few minutes. Simply head for the bridge over the river near Staithes Gallery, and take a left up Cowbar Bank!
In this photo, taken on the bridge, you can see the vantage point in the top right of the photo, where you will also find a nice little bench to catch your breath!
Here you can see how steep Cowbar Bank is and what you are in for – it isn’t too bad
And this is the treat at the end of the little Staithes walk – A stunning view of Staithes in North-Yorkshire overlooking the cottage rooftops. Some may think it’s taken with a drone but it really is quite accessible! If ever you visit Staithes – make sure you pay a visit to this view point and admire this quaint old fishing village!
Staithes video – filmed from above by drone:
Whilst you can get a superb vantage point of Staithes on your own two feet as shown above – on a recent visit to Staithes I took my drone and filmed from even higher above – you can see my recordings below on the 2min video I uploaded to YouTube:

I'm may be preaching to the converted - but please respect the outdoors and don't leave any mess behind to spoil it for everyone else #leavenotrace
I’m hopeful that being outdoors makes us appreciate our natural world more and makes us want to look after it and live more sustainably. Environmental challenges can see overwhelming - but I think if we each can do our little bit, added together, it spreads like ripples through a pond, and eventually changes the world.
