Hiring a campervan in the Lake District brings with it a new level of freedom to go anywhere! |
Campervan trip in the Lake District
The Lake District is one of my favourite places in the world and when I usually stay here it’s either wild camping or staying in a b&b or hotel. It’s a dream of mine to have my own Campervan one day, and tour the lakes whenever the mood takes me. So I thought I’d do the next best thing and rent a campervan for a long weekend in the Lake District.
The downside about hiring a camerpervan and touring the lakes is that the National Park authorities are quite strict on not just being able to park up for the night wherever you like, especially the most popular places – so your best bet is to select camp sites and other places like isolated pubs which accept motorhomes and camper vans for the night (for a fee of course!). However if you are quite familiar with the Lake District, and this comes with experience and driving around the place – there are hidden isolated spots where you will get away with pitching up for the night, if you park up late and leave early!
Anyhow – below are a few photos from this long weekend in the Lake District in my camper van for the weekend!

Hiring a campervan in the Lake District means you can stop in remote places like this and have those views all to yourself |
|
This spot was a good place to park up in the morning to enjoy breakfast by the lake and then straight in the water for a morning swim! Who needs a shower when you can do this! (Although this camper van did have a shower!) |
|
The weekend of this camper van rental was in late September so the summer crowds had disappeared and it meant you could get places like this all to yourself! |
|
When you drive around the Lake District in your camper van – you will become atuned to all the little off road parking spots and campsites where you could potentially park up for the night. I’ve now made a list of lots of places so no matter where I am in the Lakes I’ll be able to find a spot for the night |

Only in the lakes – a traffic jam! |

The more you head into the more unpopulated parts of the Lake District the more you’ll discover perfect little camper van parking spots |
|
Wastwater has got to be one of the most scenic spots to take your camper van rental too – and you can park up very close to the lake here |
|
Being able to park up your camper van close to a lake means it makes the likes of Paddleboading all the more easier to do as there is not much walking to get your paddle board to the lake |
|
Wastwater is an amazing place to stop for the day but be warned the National Trust wardens will move on anyone who stays late so choose your spots wisely. This advice goes for most of the English Lake District, where those idlyllic campervan spots are hard to find – unlike Scotland where the legal rules are different and you can park a camper van pretty much wherever you like |

The Campervan I hired on this trip was rented from a place called Roam&Away which is close to where I live in Teesside, North East England. In time I will list more recommendations to rent Campervans in the Lake District – watch this space! |
