Looking onto Easington Beach and Shipersea Bay in the distance. This is my favourite stretch of the County Durham Coast and this short walk takes you to 2 of my favourite viewpoints on it. This part of the world on the County Durham coast is not very well known at all – and the beaches are usually prety much deserted all times of the year – which makes this rugged quiet coastline of winding coastal paths perched on towering Limestone cliffs extra special. Read on to learn more about this walk…

WALK OVERVIEW:

DISTANCE: 2.8 miles
TIME: 1.5 hours
TOTAL ASCENT: 256ft
DIFFICULTY: EASY

MAP ROUTE OF WALK:

This walk starts in the car park at Easington Nature reserve, once the site of Easington Colliery mine – but you would never know now after the clean up! From there folow the clear path and initially head south to the viewpoint at on the cliff at Fox Holes. This is a superb vantage point and where the photo at the top of the page is. After admiring the view -retrace your steps a little and then head north on the coastal path to Shipersea Point for more stuning views of deserted beaches. After that you cross the railway tracks (take care here – there is a traffic light system in place to warn you of trains) and then head up hill and follow the path through farm fields for excellent elevated views. You then head back to the car park via the Easington Nature reserve. It’s a nice little route and can be extended further north on the coatal path if you wish – onto Hawthorn Hive, Blast Beach or even Seaham itself!

The cliffs tower above the North Sea and give excelelnt views. There is active erosion too and this Durham coastline is constantly changing – just stick to the clear paths and you’ll be fine!

Admiring the view of Shipersea Bay leading to Hawthorn Hive in the distance. You will cross the train tracks at the section shown in the top left of the pic and can see the path gojng up hill that you will take. It’s a really nice coastal walk and one of my favourite short coastal walks in Northern England! I hope this post inspires you to visit!

I'm may be preaching to the converted - but please respect the outdoors and don't leave any mess behind to spoil it for everyone else #leavenotrace

I’m hopeful that being outdoors makes us appreciate our natural world more and makes us want to look after it and live more sustainably. Environmental challenges can see overwhelming - but I think if we each can do our little bit, added together, it spreads like ripples through a pond, and eventually changes the world.
