West Burton Waterfalls – one of the best Waterfalls in Yorkshire
If you’re exploring the Yorkshire Dales, the West Burton Waterfalls (also known as Cauldron Falls) is one of the easiest and most rewarding natural attractions you can visit. Located just a short stroll from the heart of the idyllic West Burton village, this beautiful waterfall is proof that you don’t need a long hike or remote trail to experience one of Yorkshire’s most photogenic spots.
Often overlooked in favour of larger Yorkshire waterfalls, West Burton Waterfalls offers a peaceful setting, easy access and a classic Yorkshire Dales landscape all in one place. It’s even a good place for a wild swim if you are into that sort of thing!
West Burton Waterfalls is Incredibly Easy to Reach
One of the biggest reasons to visit West Burton Waterfalls is how accessible it is. From the village green in West Burton, a clearly marked footpath leads you to the waterfall in just a few minutes.
There are no difficult climbs or long distances involved. Instead, a gentle path takes you through a quiet stretch of woodland before opening up to the falls. This makes West Burton Waterfalls one of the most accessible waterfalls in the entire Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Because it’s so easy to reach, it’s ideal for families, casual walkers, photographers, and anyone looking for a quick but memorable stop in the Dales.
To get to West Burton Waterfall – simply park up on the main road running through the small West Burton Village (free) and follow the short route above which is on a clearly marked path – it will literally take you 5 minutes
West Burton Waterfalls (Cauldron Falls) – A Beautiful Natural Setting
The main feature of West Burton Waterfalls is Cauldron Falls, where Walden Beck flows over limestone ledges and into a calm, clear pool below. Unlike dramatic single-drop waterfalls, West Burton Waterfalls is made up of smaller cascades that weave naturally through the rock, creating a softer and more intimate scene.
Surrounded by mossy stones, woodland and seasonal foliage, West Burton Waterfalls feels tucked away and peaceful, even though it is so close to the village. After rainfall, the flow becomes more powerful, adding energy while still retaining its natural charm.
In autumn, the surrounding trees frame West Burton Waterfalls in warm colours, while spring brings fresh greens and vibrant contrasts with the flowing water.
Here’s a photo from a warm summers evening. If you cross over the stones to your left – you can walk under the rocky cliff and get right up to the waterfall. The pool is even deep enough for a swim. It’s an idyllic waterfall setting.
Why West Burton Waterfalls is Perfect for Photography
For photographers, West Burton Waterfalls is one of the most rewarding easy-access waterfall locations in Yorkshire.
The stepped cascades are perfect for long-exposure photography, allowing you to capture smooth, flowing water over textured limestone. The compact nature of the site means you can easily explore multiple compositions within a small area, from wide scenic shots to detailed close-ups of water patterns, rocks and moss.
Late evening is often the best time to photograph West Burton Waterfalls, when the light is soft and the area is quiet. Overcast conditions also work particularly well, helping to reduce harsh shadows and bring out detail in the water and landscape. Everytime I visit this amazing place it’s always different – largely due to the waterflow – sometimes it’s a gentle waterfall – sometimes it’s a powerfull cascade, but it’s also very different in each season, being quite lush and green in summer or having spectacular autumn colours.
The rocky foreground makes for a lot of intresting compostions. You may well see plenty of photos of West Burton Falls but everyone looks at them differently.
West Burton Village
A visit to West Burton Waterfalls is not just about the waterfall itself. The village of West Burton is one of the most charming in Wensleydale, with stone cottages, a traditional village green and a relaxed pace of life.
Because the waterfall is so close to the village, you can easily combine a visit to West Burton Waterfalls with a walk around the green or even a stop at the local pub ‘The Fox & Hounds’.
Combine West Burton Waterfalls with Other Yorkshire Dales Highlights
Thanks to its location, West Burton Waterfalls is easy to include in a wider Yorkshire Dales itinerary. It sits close to Aysgarth Falls, the market town of Hawes, and scenic driving routes through Wensleydale.
Because West Burton Waterfalls requires so little time to visit, it works perfectly as a stop between larger attractions without feeling rushed.
If like me you are a bit of a fan of waterfalls, then a really excellent walk I like to do starts at the nearby Aysgarth Falls Visitor Centre Car Park, then lets you explore Aysgarth Falls before waling to West Burton Falls at the half way point before returning back. See below a blog post on this walk.
