Looking towards St Abbs, perched on the dramatic Scottish Borders coastline. This picturesque fishing village combines breathtaking sea views, rugged cliffs and a rich natural environment that sets the tone for an unforgettable adventure. WALK TO ST ABBS HEAD & PETTICO WICK BAY

One of the best short walks in this area (and one of my favourite coastal walks anywhere!) starts from St Abbs Nature Centre (which is 0.5 miles from St Abbs Harbour and has parking, a cafe and toilets).

This circular walk showcases the very best of the Berwickshire coastline. The route climbs steadily towards St Abb’s Head, where dramatic cliffs plunge into the North Sea and seabirds wheel overhead during the breeding season. Continuing past the iconic lighthouse, perched on the edge of the headland, the path offers uninterrupted coastal views stretching for miles in both directions.

The descent to Pettico Wick Bay reveals a hidden gem of a cove, framed by towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters that have made the area famous among divers and wildlife enthusiasts. Returning inland via Mire Loch provides a complete contrast to the rugged coastline, with tranquil freshwater habitats attracting ducks, swans and other birdlife.

Combining spectacular sea cliffs, historic landmarks, secluded bays and peaceful wetlands, this rewarding route captures the incredible diversity and natural beauty of St Abb’s National Nature Reserve.

I like to start this walk from St Abbs Nature Centre, which has a cafe, parking and it’s more elevated than St Abbs Harbour so makes the walk a little easier at the start. You have the choice of going clockwise or anti-clockwise – it all depends on whether you want the coastal part at the start or the end, personally I like to go clockwise, ease into it along the country lanes and leave the best views for the end! You could well dip down into St Abbs Harbour if you have time and grab a bite to eat or drink!
